Careers: Life at RTW

Adam Munson

QA Tester

Having moved to Dundee a year previously for a course at Abertay, I was confident that Dundee was a city I’d continue to enjoy living in. For a small city there is enough to do here to keep young people as well as families occupied all year round, with the weather also being much drier and warmer than most other parts of Scotland and the locals being friendly (even if their accent is a little harsh!).

I’ve been at Realtime Worlds since June 2007, and as one of the original testers on APB I’ve seen the team grow along with the game, including the APB testing team which now has around 20 staff. The job has certain repetitive aspects but there is also time to do destructive testing whereby there is nothing specific to verify which allows us to come up with inventive ways to test the game, individually or with a group of other testers with team-work being a major part of our job. There are also opportunities for us to get more involved with other team disciplines and help test specific tools or areas of the game, as many of us in the test team have an art, design, production or programming background/ambition.

The office is very spacious and the testing room contains the main test team, which is separated away from most of the development teams, allowing a very vocal office atmosphere which is good since communication is important for our team and makes us more productive as it reduces the time spent searching or fixing duplications of bugs, therefore saving the development team time at a later date.

Everyone at the company are friendly and all share a passion for games, but that isn’t the only interests of people at the company and with over 200 staff, you can always find someone who already enjoys a certain activity or hobby as you or who are willing to give something a go. During my time here there have been the yearly BBQs and Christmas nights out (which are fantastic) as well as other organised events such as go-karting, which are fun and easy to get to since Dundee is in a very good location in Scotland.
