Careers: Life in Dundee

There are many benefits to being in Scotland’s fourth city — 20 minutes from the golf courses of St Andrews, an hour’s drive from the sights of Edinburgh, easy access to countryside for hillwalking/mountain biking/white-water rafting etc in the summer, and day trips to ski-slopes in the winter.

Dundee’s a city of about 145,000 people, so anyone coming from bigger cities will notice a thankful absence of major problems with traffic, air pollution, etc. The city has undergone a great deal of development in the past decade, and the transformation is continued by the likes of the new waterfront development. The two local universities and many colleges contribute to Dundee’s night life being pretty respectable, boasting an abundance of quality pubs, bars and restaurants, and major nightclubs.

Dundee also has all the other attractions you’d expect from a city: multi-screen cinemas, theatres, an award-winning contemporary Arts Centre, or you can watch a game at either of the city’s two football clubs, go bowling, ice-skating, indoor climbing, star-gazing at the observatory, and much more.

Despite all this, the cost of living in Dundee is still on average 16% cheaper than the rest of the UK, and people are often very pleasantly surprised at the quality of housing they can buy or rent in attractive areas compared to other parts of the UK.

There are around 10 games-related companies in Dundee — quite a few are startups from the local universities, but some are larger, and relations between them all are pretty friendly — there’s even a ‘Dundee games night’ every 3-6 months where everyone working in games in Dundee can get together.
